FG Summer Speakers Series - The Oceanic State by Barnaby Ferrero

As a small island, Vis has a culture that has evolved around the sea and the fish stock within it. The Falkuša boat was developed on Vis to harness the efforts of local fishermen. The history of this island, is in the fish that surrounded it. Sadly, today, scientists are telling us that by 2050, most of the Ocean's fish stock will be gone. The urgent problems the Ocean faces are too vast to be reversed by localized solutions, such as clearing plastic from the Gyres, or tending to oil spills. Drastic times call for drastic measures. The only way to immediately counteract and avoid the dystopian future we currently have ahead of us, is to take ownership of the oceans and place them under administrative and legislative sovereignty. In this talk, I will outline how we, society, can go about making this happen.

After the talk, we will screen the movie Kon - Tiki.
